Currently, I work in the Communications Division at my local public safety agency. Although I have some on air time with preprogrammed radios, the Radio Shack Pro-106 is my first experience with a fully functional scanner.

The Pro-106 is straightforward enough to operate, but you must do your homework! Regardless if you are a novice, or an experienced scanner user, the Pro-106 will be a challenge to use unless you take the time to read the manual carefully. After that, programming the Pro-106 is a breeze! Granted, the included manual does take a bit of interpretation, and some things you must learn through trial, and error. However, there are excellent supplemental sources online to help with programming the scanner such as YouTube, and my favorite website radioreference.com. If you are willing to spend a few extra bucks, you can purchase the USB cable accessory, and downloadable software that will make programming a cinch. Even so, after doing some research, I was able to...Read more

4.0 out of 5 stars Good Digital Scanner, November 9, 2011

RS Pro 106 capably handles Digital, Ericsson /Edacs, Motorola and more.

This scanner is the same model as the Gre PSR-500 handheld and Gre PSR 600 base scanners.
The look is slightly different, but it's the same scanner.

The Gre models come with the USB programming cable that the Shack charges extra for.

Highly recommend using some type of software to program these things.
It is possible to program manually, but requires a lot of steps, and a few headaches along the way.

I use a combination of ARC 500 ( to program / manage ) and Psr Edit / Psr Control ( To auto store talk groups )

Win 500 is another option for programming / managing, but I found it a little less user friendly.

I have had this for a year now and just love it. There is definitely a fairly steep learning curve but once you get the basics down it can be fun. Without question you will need the ARC500 software with the interface cable and go to radioreference.com, the scanner is nearly useless without them. I happened across an astute manager at RS that had very extensive programming at his store that I was able to transfer to my 106. That made life much easier. I just did some of my own editing. I'm sure if you ask around your community that you can find someone with a list. I had the GRE counterpart for a bit but went with the 106 simply because of the ergonomics. If your a geek like myself...priceless. 4 stars just because of the learning curve...know what your getting into.
