The SL3 is a standalone GPS-enabled device that warns drivers to thousands of driving threats that include red light, speed cameras and caution areas. These driving threats could cause unintended traffic violations as well as accidents. The result, drivers have heightened situational awareness?extra help to know what?s around them, and what?s ahead. The SL3 GPS Safety Locator provides a simple, safe way to warn drivers of potential dangers at a price that is less than most traffic violations or deductibles.

SL3 Features

The AURA Database
The AURA database stores GPS coordinates of speed and red light cameras and driving hazards. Users can access this database online and download daily updates 24 hours a day 7 days a week. The SL3 Safety Locator connects via USB, synchronizing the coordinates for the most current and accurate camera and dangerous intersection alerts.

Custom Locations
Drivers can also add up to 1,000 location-based alerts to ensure that they are alerted to temporary or moveable driving threats.

Adjustable Brightness
You can adjust the brightness of the display on the SL3 to your preference, with bright and dim settings to choose from.

Adjustable Volume
The SL3 also features an adjustable volume for controlling the loudness of the audible alert.

How the SL3 Works

Driven by the proprietary AURA database, the SL3 uses a series of LED lights and tones to alert the driver to both the type of threat and its relative proximity. The 3-Zone Notification System escalates the alerts based on the driver's speed ensuring enough time is given before the intersection is reached.
Zones are measured differently depending on your speed, with two steps to accomodate gradual and faster travel.
The Cobra SL3 responds to four types of alerts: Speed Trap, Photo Enforcement (Red Light and Speed Cameras), Caution Areas (high accident locations) and User Points. As you approach a stored location, the unique sound for that type of location will be sounded.

Visual Alert
In addition to audio alerts, the zones are indicated with the 5 LEDs flashing, with more of them flashing the closer you get.

  • ZONE 1: Outer green LEDs flash.
  • ZONE 2: Outer green and middle amber LEDs flash.
  • ZONE 3: The green, amber and center red LEDs all flash.

The device itself is okay. You have to memorize what type of threat each sound represents because the visual display only indicates proximity, not threat type. The sounds themselves are a little quirky - reminds me of R2D2. It can be hard to differentiate the different sounds at first.

The real problem is that Cobra's database is not very good. Even after updating the database, the unit sees maybe one out of five red light camera intersections that I come across. I live in metro Washington, DC and northern Virginia and parts of Maryland. I will be buying an Escort soon and probably throw this away. It may be cheap ($50) but it's not worth the dashboard space it takes up.

I purchased the AURA SL3C on August 30th 2011 and it gives false signals frequently. Also, I tried downloading the updates and the website has a very poor instructions and the loader will not work properly. I have up to 30 days to return it so I problably will. Im traveling into Phoenix this weekend coming so I will update my review after that and I will let you know how it worked out. I currently have three cobra radar detectors and I'm very happy with them. In the past I have recommended to my coworkers the cobra brand since, I had very good luck with them, however this unit hasen't fullfiled my expectations.

I have been using this gadget over the last two weeks and find that it does what it claims to do. I have two problems with this device. First, the signal noises are a bit confusing and secondly, it doesn't seem to have enough red light camera locations. However, it is great for the price.
