The ESD 9870 detects all radar (X, K, super-wideband Ka), laser, and safety radar systems. It also provides switchable highway and city modes to prevent false alarms in congested urban areas. Its DigiView data display makes intelligibility a cinch (through its use of easily recognizable text), while EasySet programming menu offers user-friendly mode selection/setting with visual guidance. Further, the unit's Stay Set memory retains all critical settings in non-volatile memory so they'll be there even after a power outage.
IntelliMute is a relative-speed-sensing auto-mute system designed to virtually eliminate false alerts. Spectre Alert shows you when you're under surveillance of Spectre radar detector detection, while the Spectre Undetectable mode provides complete immunity to Spectre detection.
Strobe Alert works with tens of thousands of emergency vehicles currently equipped with traffic light controlling strobe emitters to provides advanced alert of the presence and/or approach of these vehicles. Safety Alert, meanwhile, warns you of emergency vehicles and road hazards from systems equipped with Safety Alert transmitters.
VG-2 Alert lets you know when you're under VG-2 radar surveillance, working alongside VG-2 Undetectable data display to provide complete immunity to VG-2 detection. The city/highway switch lets you manually select an operating mode, reducing the frequency of falsing in densely populated urban areas, and you can dim the detector display to enhance night driving visibility.
Other great features include SmartPower (a Cobra exclusive that automatically shuts of power to the unit when ignition is turned off), a digital-signal-strength indicator (which shows relative proximity to a target), voice alert (which gives you specific-band voice announcements), an eight-point electronic compass (which automatically provides an accurate electronic direction reading), and a system-ready prompt (which signifies that the radar detector has correctly completed a self-test and is ready).

I got my unit confiscated today by the police in Ontario as a result of this claim. The manufacturer also claims that the unit can detect the Spectre. This is also FALSE. I held the 9870 right in front of the police officers Spectre and the 9870 detected NOTHING!I find these false claims appauling and I want my money back not only for the unit (purchased at Amazon) but also for the fine. Pay no attention to the above review.. This unit is VG-2 Undetectable, it never claims to be undetectable to Spectre. I have tested my 9870 on a spectre and vg-2, I get alerts on both tests and vg-2 can't see my radar.But since I live in the United States, it is not against the law for me to own a radar detector, hence I have no need for these special features. That is if it detects the real ones. My town uses radar trailers that use the same Ka band as the cars but my 9870 would not detect it sometimes. Then for some reason it would just start going off when I was in the middle of no where. It would seem to cycle through everything "Ka.....K.....X....Train approaching". For some reason there were a lot of trains crossing my paths in places like parking lots. Now I know that radar detectors have false alerts but this thing is horrible!!! Don't waste your money! Invest in another company, Cobra makes horrible radar detectors, this is my second and last one. Don't bother getting help with your detector from Cobra either they just don't care. Check out the Escort Passport 8500 X50 instead. |
